Whale Sharks: Silent Deepwater Horizon Victims?Whale Sharks in Mexico

They feed by skimming the surface of the water and they ingest almost anything they find there. If what they swallow kills them, they sink silently to the bottom of the sea. This past week, several juvenile whale sharks were spotted within 4 miles of the origin of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Since some of these animals are “site specific” in their behaviors, wherever they were “hanging out” before the original blowout is where they will try to return – only this time, it is feared that, if they considered the Deepwater Horizon rig to be their home waters, then their return will be to their deaths.

The week before, a group of about 100 whale sharks were spotted off of the coast of Louisiana, but in an area where there was, as yet, no oil. What is most upsetting about this issue is that no one knows if the whale sharks along the U.S. coast and those along Yucatan’s coasts are part of the same migratory groups. In fact, no one – anywhere in the world – knows for certain what the migratory patterns of their whale sharks actually are!

Now, and with Mexico in the lead, scientists are getting serious about tracking the largest fish in the world. Since whale sharks not only skim the surface of the ocean to feed, but also dive to great depths, those in the Gulf of Mexico are at risk for death from poison and from suffocation. Finally, while researching this story, we learned another shocking piece of information. The World Conservation Union lists the whale shark as having become a vulnerable population. Yet, the U.S. does not list them as endangered or threatened, and hunting whale sharks in U.S. waters is legal! We are still attempting to decide if that knowledge is heartbreaking, infuriating, or both.

If you’ve been thinking about visiting Isla Holbox to see the whalesharks, don’t put it off any longer! Here are a few places that will help you plan your trip: Holbox Whale Shark Tours

July 4th at Pro Dive

So I got to work the day with my honey and have some fun out on the new boat we are leasing for the summer, the Scuba Bob. July 4th was a long day but I was rewarded with teaching a couple who stopped diving 5 yrs ago to have kids and are now back diving, taught Reef Check divers in the morning, and had a great time on the night boat watching the fireworks! So all in all it was a good 4th!

Freeport, Bahamas 2010

Well I was off traveling again…this time I took Matt and we went to Grand Bahamas Island into the town of Freeport. My friend Cristina works at a dive company over there and I have always wanted to come visit her and she what she does. The dive shop was UNEXSO and its an awesome company. They are really professional over there and run great diving experiences. Matt and I went on a 2 tank dive to the Wreck of the La Rose followed by a shallow reef. What amazed me about this dive was that I saw Nassau Groupers!!!  We NEVER see Nassau Groupers in Florida because they are super over-fished in our area. What bummed me out though was the abundant amount of lion fish on the reef. I saw about 10 all within the same area. Lion Fish are an evasive species to the Carribbean…there are lots of stories of how they got here…someone let their fish tank go in the ocean, a hurricane…whatever the story is the bottom line is these fish are a problem. To learn more about the lion fish problem visit REEFs website, they are a group deciated to preserve the marine ecosystems in Florida and the Carribbean.

The next dive trip we went on was the Carribbean Reef Shark dive. This was pretty intense, I have never been that close to sharks feeding before but Matt was there to calm my nerves. Cristina dressed herself up in a chain-metal suit and proceeded to handle the sharks like they were pets…it was crazy. What she does is puts the shark into a trance-like state called tonic immobilty by rubbing the sharks Ampullae of Lorenzini (or what is known as pores on their nose that are connected to a sensory system).  The shark is then able to be held and moved around for all to see. I think by giving these divers an up-close look at a shark without “fear” that it will bite will give divers eaze around sharks on their next dive…also hopefully will bring appreciation to all shark species and they will do their part to help us conserve these beautiful creatures. If you are at all interested in learning more about sharks, my friend Brendal is your girl…she gives a PADI presentation on Shark Awareness. Its an awesome class with great information (contact me and I will get you in contact with Brendal).

The next day Cristina treated us to one of her favorite types of diving…Cave and Cavern diving. We went out to Ben’s Cave located in the Lucayan National Park. Ben’s cave contains stalactites and stalagmites (which only can form in air), and the water consists of a freshwater lens floating on underlying sea water. It was a totally different style of diving for me.

Earth Day at Pro Dive

Earth Day is April 22…and Pro Dive together with Oceanic Defense held an Earth Event for everyone to participate in helping out the environment. We had Samantha Whitcraft give us a presentation on Marine Debris…then we went to collect it on Fort Lauderdale beach. In only 40 minutes we collected close too 10 pounds of trash. Lots of plastic!!!! It was gross and sad how our actions really affect the environment. After we collected, Samantha separated the trash into piles to survey and record, I then entered this data into a survey for Padi’s Project Aware…I am curious to see if they publish the amount of marine debris that was picked up for Earth Day around the world….what do you think the number of pounds of trash was collected??? Click here to hear about other events that occurred for Earth Day at Project Aware’s website.

Galapagos for my Birthday!

After a year long of planning…I got to take my trip of a lifetime!!! I did a live-aboard dive vacation in the Galapagos Islands. Some of my friends from Hawaii and I went on the Peter Hughes Sky Dancer boat for a week of diving and land excursions. I had some amazing experiences…walked with huge tortoises, hung out with iquanas, snorkeled with sea lions and penguins, went diving with 5 species of sharks (white-tip reef sharks, silky sharks, Galapagos Sharks, Hammerheads, and a Whale Shark….and the best part of my trip are my wild dolphin encounters. The water temp there was 85 degrees so I went in my swimsuit and rash guard…it was awesome! I got photos of the juvenile female whale shark, I named her Isabella, and sent them to www.whaleshark.org for research! I was truly blessed to meet wild dolphins upclose and personal…Rosita the female with her baby Pepe and the male dolphin Edwin all let me be apart of their day! I have some amazing video of my adventures so stay tune for my video release…but until then enjoy my photos!

I enjoyed my 29th Birthday on vacation…and this really was the best bday present EVER!!! If you are a diver you MUST go on this trip!
