August 2009 PFI Clinic

I took a freediving course from Performance Freediving International (PFI), and boy did I have a ton of fun!!! I totally challenged my inner water-girl during this course. They give you the tips to hold your breathe for longer and to recover from a breathe hold without blacking out. This course also goes over the physics and physiology behind freediving…especially explains the question everyone has…”Won’t you get brain danage if you hold your breath?” The answer is NO…and if you want to know why that is TAKE THE COURSE:)

PFI also is very serious about the safety of freediving…they emphasize freediving in buddy teams and how to handle blackouts. It was lots of fun to learn the methods of freediving and I am definitly hooked on this sport.

Through out the class I had set some goals to acheive…before the class I had a static breathe hold in a pool of 2 min 15 seconds and the deepest freedive I had was 80 feet. At the end of the class I had a static breathe hold of 3 mins 20 seconds and my deepest dive was 100 feet!!!!!  I was on cloud-nine!!!

A lot of people ask me WHY would I want to freedive to these depths and hold my breathe for this long and well I am not a professional who competes BUT I like to challenge myself and I wanted to compete against myself. Others take this course for spearfishing benefits…so if you want more info about freediving and the courses go to PFI’s website!!!
